Ancillary texts research and analysis

Magazine Adverts

As well as my music video, I also have to produce two ancillary texts to further promote my bands album and video. I have chosen to create a magazine advertisement and a Digital-pack for my band's album and DVD. In order to create a successful and professional product I will research and analyse three existing magazine adverts and digital-packs by current bands. From this i will then gain the necessary codes and conventions for my own and incorporate these into my own product to look realistic.

Advert 1 analysis -

This first poster is for the album 'The boy who new too much' by Mika (2009)
This poster at first glance of course is a very detailed poster but can immediately reflect the thoughts and imaginations of a young boy. This would be very appealing as Mika has mainly a youthful following aged around 7 to 14 years old. The album name is clearly illustrated by the drawing suggestion that he knows a lot through reading. We can also recognise as an audience from the mise en scene of the picture that the character is a stereotypical teenager with a messy room, lots of posters on the wall and how he is in his own little world, miles away in his thoughts which is portrayed by the drawings of space, stars and planets. The lively, bold colours again suggest the youthful target audience and how they might relate to the drawing more than if it was a photograph of something. The artists name is in a very large font, in order for the audience to immediately recognise him and his new album. The font is not only bold but looks raised and 3-d like in order for it to stand out from the page. The white colour of the font also allows it to be noticed as it contrasts with the colourful background. So the boldest font is the name of the artist to draw the target audience in, and the album name is smaller as its the next thing they should read. The font again for this album name is different and more childlike and could reflect the boys handwriting. You can also see a black and white picture of Mika the artist, which contrasts with the bold colours which could display the age gap between the boy and the adult. The picture is also in the form of a poster, as not to stand out too much and blend in with the other wall posters. There is then further information which the audience if they are interested will be informed about. This includes the date that it's out and two hit tracks that should entice the audience further to go out and buy the album. There is also an official website for Mika fans to join up to and find out the latest music, events and competitions.

Magazine advert Analysis 2

My second analysis is of the magazine poster for the Basement Jaxx 'Rooty' album (2001)
This poster to me is very abstract with its two layers of outer space and random pink and blue paint. The contrast in these layers could outline the different sounds and textures to their hybrid genre of deep house, electronic, house and techno house music. The imagery of space and stars could reflect how your mind subconsciously moves into another dimension through the music, an almost out of this world feeling. I also feel that the pink paint could signify also a more lively, unpredictable levels within the music. The colours could also connotes a mixed gender target audience through the use of pink against black to contrast, but yet appeal to them both. There signature artist font for the band name has been used to immediately gain audience recognition. The contrast of smooth and sharp edges within the font could reflect the different layers and textures of the music again. There is also a stripey pattern displayed within the face of the font which rises up and down unevenly across which could be associated with the volume and measurement of the bass line. This pattern and colour scheme has also been used in a more recent album called 'Oh my gosh' released 2005 which the audience could relate back to the bands earlier roots with this album cover art. This font is also used smaller for the album title 'Rooty' which doesn't really make sense but the image of the monkey chewing on what could be the root of a plant could amplify the album name further. This image also creates a comical element to the album cover as monkeys are generally considered humorous animals. Therefore it lightens the mood and creates a warming inviting feel to the album and not to take the band to seriously. There is again like the first magazine poster, further information of the date its out, a website to follow them and even an event in which to watch them play live. This was all in very small print as its less important when trying to grab and entice and audience to read the poster and is just additional information.

Magazine advert analysis 3

My last magazine advert analysis is 'The Best Of -The Vines'( 2008 ) which is a compilation album of their greatest hits. Their album is kept rather simple with just green and white colours used. However i feel it is really effective and stands out, and the vines look rather modern and abstract. Of course the leafy vine pattern that is used on this album illustrates literally the bands name and is a clear signifier of the band to an audience as they've kept this theme throughout their album work. However there is more of the vines in detail on this particular album which could reflect their growth of success as a band and how much they've progressed. The same font is also used on all their albums for the name of the band which would create continuity and recognition from their target audience. There is quite an eery more grungy font that says 'the best of' next to it which is a definite clue in the genre of the band's music. There classed under the genres of alternative rock, garage rock, post-grunge and neo-psychedelia which is seen to be different and quite dark in some areas of their music which is illustrated by the font. Again there is additional information of when the albums released, main hits and an exclusive bonus track and what formats their available in like Cd's and downloads.

Codes and conventions of magazine album adverts

From researching and analysing other magazine adverts I have identified the main key features necessary to promote an album:

1) Large/ bold / signature font used for the name of the band to capture audience's attention

2) Name of the album in fairly average font size usually in a different font to bands name

3)Relevant background/images/drawings which can be associated with album name/issue

4) Additional information of the hits included, any bonus tracks, date release, live events and an official website address

5) Also, a very small the record company label which the band are under

Classic album cover analysis

I will now look at three classic album covers from three different bands and eras. I will again look for the codes and conventions with them and try to identify and incorporate these into my own ancillary text.

Analysis 1 - London Calling - The Clash

This is a very classic album cover for the album 'London Calling by The Clash (1979). The British punk rock band used political rants and reference to world social events that were happening at the time in this album, especially the hit song itself 'London calling'. The font is bold and colourful and in exactly the same style as Elvis Presley's first album in 1956. The bassist Paul Simonon admitted that when Elvis's record came out, rock and roll was pretty dangerous and he felt that when he brought out their record it was 'pretty dangerous stuff too'. This may be the inspiration to lift the text from Elvis Presley's album and use it for theirs. Elvis Presley's picture is also an action shot of him singing hard, and the clash have brought even more passion to their album cover with a release of frustration and anger as the bassist Paul, violently slams the guitar down. It was hard times for them back then, and i feel it really comes across within this picture and is a very effective photograph. The black and white colour furthermore adds to the dark side and emotions of this picture. The clothes are very iconographic of that era and genre too, with the tight jeans, sleeveless jackets and leather boots creates a harsh, edgy rock punk style which further promotes their genre of music and ideologies. I found it unusual overall though that the bands name is considerably smaller than the album title which i haven't found yet in my previous research into magazine album posters.

Analysis 2 - Super tramp

I find this album cover very fascinating to look at as its just so unique and effective for the audience. Of course the whole layout is based on the concrete jungle of new york city but of course the whole theme is based around having breakfast in America and all the menus, cutlery, plates and cups etc all make up the skylines of all the buildings. The waitress holding up the orange juice is also suppose to reassemble the statue of liberty in a similar pose. Her skin is made to look shiny also, like a fake statue. However the overall image is comical and amusing from how it is cleverly constructed together. From the audiences view, its as if you were looking out of a plane window to see it as its even got the little droplets of condensation on the window to look like a realistic drawing. The woman is a typical happy, American waitress as well, with the generic uniform, hat piece and large figure as big breakfast are served in America generally. I find the writing clever too, the way it has two tones of blue and white fading from the sky into what seems the clouds. I also interpreted the writing as if the letters were super hero's zooming up into the air with super powers. Almost like the super hero superman, but in this case a comical figure, super tramp. I like how the album name is on the menu as well which is very relevant as if it was the restaurants name on the front like a normal one would.

Analysis 3 - The Prodigy - The Fat of the Land

This is another classic album cover for 'The Fat of the Land'- by Prodigy (1997) and again is another different genre mainly consisting of Big beat, synth punk, break beat and hardcore techno. I really like this album cover too as its again comical from an audiences point of view as it looks like the crab has its hands up raving. Audiences familiar with thee prodigy's music will associate this type of movement with fans dancing in crowds and the band themselves worshipping the music with passion. The motion blur on the photo adds further effect as it connotes fast tempo, loud songs that surrounds you and almost hypnotises you into a trance. It could also reflect the drug culture associated with the prodigy's music where everything around you is disorientated but the loud bass of the music you can still hear. The picture also looks abroad, like Ibiza for example which for some sub genres of their music (more dance trance music) would blend in well as its the party capital and the prodigy's music is all about letting go and losing yourself in the music. There is of course the bands name at the top and their signature symbol to represent their band - a tarantula(which is also the name of one of their more famous songs) so they already get audience recognition just from that. The album title then follows in smaller font underneath 'The fat of the land' generically.

Through analysing these classic albums, i have studied the meaning, issues and analysed the reasons behind the construction and concious decisions made. There is a strong theme of humour on the last two album covers which i feel is an effective technique for attracting and engaging an audience with the album art. There is also the broad charchteristics of having just one photo and layering the bands name, symbol and album title over it. As the albums have progressd you can see a change from black and white images to colour, more experimental fonts and sizes and less serious front covers and more abstract or humorous album covers.

Editing sessions/ Audience Feedback/ My music video

First editing session

I have now started editing my music video and i am using the Adobe Pro editing suite. I have basic skills in editing already from editing home videos, and previous productions Ive made at college in media studies and an enrichment course in digital video editing. Just like I expected editing is the most time consuming part of the project, but luckily I enjoy editing the most out of everything, and already i have spent about six consecutive hours editing my video. There is still a lot to do as it was mainly just transferring my footage to the computer but for now i have put everything in order so i have a framework to work around and later on I will add special effects on. I plan to use black and white for the shots of their memories to show a change from the past and of course colour for the present. I would also like to use a tool called colour pass which picks out a bold colour, with the rest of the image in black and white. I think the audience would be attracted to the contrast of colour and black and white and appreciated by my target audience of a youthful generation.

Second session of editing

This session I spent longer (as i stayed at college till 8!) but it was worth the stay as i have gained some great outcomes and effects on my video. I have learnt how to fade clips into each other using the pen tool and dragging the yellow opacity line down to create a gradual, professional fade between clips. I have also incorporated effects such as sun beam, which i use when panning across the train tracks to make the shot more interesting for the audience. I have manipulated the speed duration on many of the shots to create slow motion effect to contrast with the fast tempo of the music towards the end. I have also sped up particular shots up to go to the beat of the music. Today ray showed me how to use the video effect colour pass, which enables you to focus on a bold colour leaving the rest of the shot black and white. I pasted this attribute to the rest of the montage clips to show a change in time of past memories but still kept interesting for the audience with a focus colour like red or green or blue. I have the majority of my video edited now but i still have to finish it within the third editing session. I will have to make sure that i am either really early or stay late again after college in order to get on my computer and finish it.

Third editing session

In this session i have created the main bulk of my video and its almost finished as i spent all my frees and stayed back after college in the editing suite adding to my video. I have been changing, and switching clips in order for the audience to understand the story better, making sure the clips are to the beat and eliminating anything unnecessary for the video. I have also learnt little short cuts which will save me time like clicking the bar space to automatically play the video, how to copy and paste clips i want to repeat, and also paste the same attributes from another clip like the colour pass effect for the memory montage. I did expect to finished my video within this editing session but adding the effects and making precise decisions has taken longer than i thought. So i will use a fourth editing session to finish the ending of my video.

Fourth editing session

In fourth and final session i have created a finished product that i am proud with. I had to create the ending for my video which was challenging as the music changes to a fast pace and i had to create sharper, faster clips to amplify the change in music and create the rush of the train station scene of the girl leaving. I had a few alternative endings for my video such as ending with the girls vision through the train window or the guy watching the train leave as he's on the platform or a memory clip in slow motion of them together. I decided to combine my first and second idea and have the guy watching the train into the point of view of the girl on the train. I am very proud of my finished product, there are of course parts which could be improved but i still feel it will engage the audience and deliver a clear narrative to my audience.

Audience Feedback

After finishing the first cut of my video I thought it was best that i gain some audience feedback off teachers, students in my class and friends. I did this in order to take on board a range of criticisms and consider how i could improve my video to be more successful and professional.

Tim Anderson - Media Teacher

After Tim watched my video he said that I had used some good shots and quite a clear narrative, however he also said that some shots are too long and can be quite boring in parts. He also thought i underused a particular shot that he really liked of the Beverley minster and said i should repeat this shot somewhere else for effect and continuity.

From this feedback, I will edit my shots shorter so that my audience does not become bored, and edit different angles into scenes to create variety for the audience. I wont rearrange the plot of my narrative as this seems to have been made clear to my audience but I will copy the shot of Beverley minster as it is quite an interesting shot and should hopefully engage my audience more. I of course trust Tim's feedback the most out of all of my audiences as he teaches the subject and knows the mark scheme and content of the syllabus so I will adjust my video to his criticisms.

George Smithson - Friend of mine

Even though George is a friend of mine and his views on my video could be biased, I feel he is a very honest, outspoken person and wouldn't hold back on a criticism. He said that the narrative is very relevant to people our age and that its made clear whats happening to the couple. He also said that my slow motion clips look very effective with the contrast of faster music. However, he mentioned that there is too many scenes of the couple kissing and the boy kissing the girls head, and said it made it a bit too corny and soppy. He also criticised my end scene, which i was expecting as i didn't have a clip of her actually on the train due to difficulties and George picked up on this. He said that it needs to look more realistic of her getting on the train, or to signify it better.

I was very grateful of this feedback as George would be put into my target audience category for my music video and his thoughts would be very relevant. I will take into consideration what he said and will aim to eliminate the excessive kissing scenes to reduce the 'corny' level, and i will try to show the rush and emotions better at the end train scene and attempt to bring in a point of view shot I did myself getting on the train. Hopefully this will make it more realistic and improve the end result of my video.

I lastly gathered feedback from Naz another student from wyke, who i don't know as well and who takes film studies. I thought it would be interesting as she would be a female in my target audience category and may collect different views on my video to the previous ones. Also because she is familiar with the editing suites and does film studies, her critic may be more relevant than George's as he has never worked on one. She felt very touched by video and too agreed that the issue is very current at the moment for a lot of people which i was pleased with. Overall she really enjoyed it and appreciated it and couldn't say anything bad about it. Whether she was just been nice, or if she generally liked it I'm not sure, but i still amend those changes from above and hopefully create a more professional result than what it is now.

My music video promo

Shooting my video on the day

Overall I am very pleased with the shots i have gathered and feel the day ran rather smoothly as I followed my plan and storyboard across the two days. I have more than enough material which i feel is always better in case i don't like a particular angle when editing the video or in case i decide to completely cut a scene out. I managed to capture particular scenes more than once from different angles so it creates variation for the audience when filming Liv and Tom at home and in the town. However I found this difficult when filming in the train station as the trains would come and go and sometimes the train would even wait for Liv as she was pretending to get on it which caused us a few problems. I expected this kind of obstruction the scene as this is only an amateur production, and not professional where i could have organised a scene with train properly. However I did the best I could and managed to get a shot of them walking up to the train, her about to step onto it and a close up of their lands losing touch. I feel this should be enough to signify her leaving without completely laying it out for the audience, which could be more effective and less cheesy.

The actors Liv and Tom acted very professional as well and kept composed when the train scenes didn't go to plan. They were always in character and what i really liked was that they kept the acting to a minimal enough for the audience to capture the emotion but didnt over due the scenes in order to create a natural, realistic effect. On camera i could really feel the actual emotions of their existing relationship and i was really pleased with them. They brought changes of clothing like i asked to show change in time, and arrived on shedule for the shoot. I couldnt of asked for anything more from them :)

Planning, Cast, Props, Location and Shots

In order for my music video run smoothly I need to devise a plan in order to take into account the time I have left, when my cast is available, weather on the day of filming, the atmosphere of location, use of props and leave plenty of time to edit my film as this takes the longest.

Planning - I wills shoot my film across two days(Saturday and Sunday) this is because my cast members will be available on the weekend and also the location will be buzzing with people at this time which i need for my film. The reason i need to days is so that all the couple work i will do Saturday and any shots of scenery which doesn't involve the cast i will shoot in my own time then so i am not rushed or wasting any ones time. I have looked at the weather forecast briefly to check that it will be sunny which is what i need in particular as some of my shots involve beams of sunlight. I should hopefully have all the footage i need across these two days to edit and produce a detailed video.

Cast - My video is based around two people (a couple) who i have selected carefully for different reasons. My first reason being is that they are not camera shy and have basic acting skills from drama classes at school to make the narrative realistic and believable for the audience. Secondly, they are an actual couple, so the chemistry and emotions that are portrayed on film are natural and not faked or forced. Thirdly, they live in the area i am filming in, so i can rely on them to be on time for the filming schedule. Lastly, and i leave it till last because it's not important that they are an attractive couple but it will have an impact on my video as the audience may be attracted to the actors and be engaged with my music video more. They are also the correct age for the concept of my story (college leavers 17 - 18) which emphasises the reality of the narrative.

Olivia Robinson - 17 years of age - playing the girlfriend

Tom Denham -18 years of age - playing the boyfriend

Props

I will be using a range of costumes(everyday clothing) so that the couple appears very natural and comfortable around each other and also a change of clothing for different scenes so that it shows change in time throughout the memory montage clips.

I will be using a picnic blanket, and buying ice creams for the picnic scene in the park. I also be sing toms car in driving scenes to the train station. A heart necklace in a gift box in the scene their relationship moves to the next level of commitment. A trampoline for the garden scene together. Magazine for them to read and blanket to snuggle up in. Also two university letters - one for Westminster for Olivia and one for Leeds university for Tom. Lastly I will be using a suitcase on the final scene when Liv leaves on the train for uni which will be authentic as she takes her belongings with her.

Location - I will keep the locations very local for the couple to show how comfortable they are in their home town, which emphasises everything she is leaving behind. I have set my video In Beverley where the couple live as they are familiar with town and it would be very natural for them to act scenes within their local town. The main scene is the train station which of course is Beverley train station where i will film trains leaving and arriving, the station itself for establishing shots, the clock to create immediacy for the audience, and shots of the couple waiting and hugging on the platform. It will be very difficult to film Liv actually on the train looking out, so i will signify her leaving through a shot of their hands losing touch on the platform. As i travel on the train to meet them i will use shots by myself from outside the window to create point of view what Liv sees as she leaves the station.

For the montage clips I will use pleasant locations such as parks, gardens and homes to emphasise her happiness and memories with Tom. These soft, tranquil locations will contrast with the harshness of brick walls in the train station and the bland colours of the tracks and trains. This also connotes a change of feelings for the couple from happiness in the pleasant locations and emptiness in the restricted walls of the station.
Beverley Train Station -

A list of shots I will use:

Establishing shots - of train station and town of Beverley - to state the location
Panning shots - of the trains to follow movement
Arc shots - panning around the subject - Liv and Tom
Medium shots - of the couple walking together -action shots
Long shots - of the couple walking away from the camera
Close ups - of the couples faces to show emotion of one another and holding hands
Handheld shots - to create point of view of the actors/rush of train station
Over the shoulder shot - to read university letters/see one an others emotions
Low angles - to show the couples strength to try and stick together, trampoline shots - when they were in control of their lives
High angles - of the train and the tracks that pan upwards
Zoom lens - to capture a close up gradually but from a distance
Two shots - to show both the couple experiencing the same feelings

Health and Safety
As I will be shooting in various different locations that are unpredictable and live, I need to take into consideration the health and safety of myself, the cast and the public around me. The scenes shot within the house will have very limited danger but I will consider more carefully the shots outside. I will make sure my camera is fully charged in advance to eliminate any wires that could lead to accidents. For the trampoline shots i will set my camera quite a distance away to protect myself and also notify my cast not jump to high or push each other to avoid any potential accidents. As there is only two people on the trampoline too, this will limit the dangers and comply with the 'two persons maximum' rule. For the scenes shot within the train station, i will note to the public around me of what i am doing so that they are aware of m equipment and the situation. I will also ensure that my cast is not put in any danger by not standing too closely to the platform, on the tracks etc. Lastly, i will be shooting scenes within a car where one of my cast will be driving where i will make sure not to in any way encourage them to drive recklessly or distract their concentration to keep other road users, the public and each other safe.

Story Board for music video

In order to plan out the content, shots and locations for my music video I have created a storyboard consiting of 67 different shots. Although the order of these shots may change and be manipulated when editing my music video, this is just a guideline to further organise my video shoot and avoid wasting time. I drew each picture very simple with the relevant action clearly displayed and noted down the duration of the shot, a description of the content and the specific camera shot/angle.

Here have created an animatic of my storyboard in order to show a realistic vision of what my video will be like. I created this on Windows live movie maker on my home computer, but will use the Adobe Premier Pro editing suite at college to construct my actual music video. I imported pictures off my video camera (as it has the ability to capture stills) and then dragged them into the correct order on the timeline. I then added the track 'So here we are' by Bloc Party which i have chosen for my music video, to cut the pictures to the beat. I used various pans, zooms and fades to make my storyboard more interactive and show how my music video will be like and I also used an effect which highlights the outlines of my drawings in white so that it stands out and looks interesting for my audience to watch.

Audience Research

Target audiences for music videos in general have changed over time. The demand for more and more to be produced over the years has become a necessity for artists and therefore with more competition the content of the videos have began to challenge the original, safe live performance music videos. They are now based around post modern content that reflects today's society and therefore changes the target audience.

As times have changed, so have the representations within music videos to reflect the stereotypes of society, which affects the age of target audiences. For example, the older generation will not be as familiar and engaged with the current generation portrayed in many music videos and therefore will find them less appealing and in some cases offensive. This is because of the sexual content and drug/alcohol abuse has become a popular issue within music videos as the more youthful generations can relate to it. For example: Wild house party's, with half naked women, alcohol and intoxicated people can be found in 'I gotta a feeling' by the Black eyed peas. Fighting and violence can be found in 'End credits - chasing status ft plan B' and a lot of sexual content, drugs, alcohol, violence and even animal cruelty in another chasing status video called 'Pieces'. All this will appeal to the younger generation aged around 16- 26 and not the older generation which shows a dramatic change in target audiences.

No matter what genre of music, there is always an audience that is targeted through the songs, ideologies, trends and lifestyles of an artist. However with the release of more and more hybrid genres it has also created more niche(concentrated) audiences who particularly like a new sound. This again breaks down general audiences into more specific/targeted audiences.

My music video will appeal to a youthful audience as Bloc party have created a postmodern, hybrid of genres but still not the majority as the slight indie genre will attract people who consider themselves to be individual and different. However it could be argued that they are still a stereotype by following a set of ideologies and trends in becoming an 'indie'. Bloc party themselves though have broken the mould and become individual. This is because in essence, the music itself is very individual and not really based upon other bands. It is a hybrid of alternative dance, rock, pop and punk revival. The lyrics are also very abstract and can create many different meanings for the audience and not just plain, obvious lyrics like the majority of other indie bands. Also the band is not generic as it is multicultural consisting of Black, White and Oriental backgrounds which is very different to find within the indie genre. This too breaks the mould and emphasises their individuality.

A lot of the content in bloc party's videos are performance based with shots of the band playing guitars and drums which appeals to their audience as they can view their talent and indie fashion (usually consisting of scruffy hair, skinny jeans, tight tops etc) However some of their music videos have abstract narratives such as 'Mercury' and ' flux' which have no real meaning, like some of the lyrics in their songs too which makes them different. The video to the song i have chosen 'So here we are' by bloc party has inspired me as it uses very creative shots and time lapse which i hope to use in my own music video. Just like the original it will be narrative based but I won't have shots of the artists themselves. Instead I will be using two actors to lead the video, but i will use shots of random scenery and montage clips to maintain the abstract theme in the song. However my own video will slightly change the target audience. It will still appeal to a youthful generation between 16-26 but as well as having an indie audience, the visuals of my music video will open up to a general audience. This is because the concept of my music video is based around a couple breaking up which a lot of people will have experienced in their life and can relate to. If this were to be a real project as well, then this would make my music video successful as a wider audience would equal to more sales. So I will be taking into account the generic style of the the Indie genre to appeal to their current audience but also creating my own too in the process. My narrative is not in any way offensive as it is a love story which a lot of people can relate to and it would be nice to know that the older generation could enjoy my music video without feeling uncomfortable and offended by the typical content of today.

Existing music videos similar to the style of mine

My music is narrative based with no performance of the band playing and just my two actors to tell the story and the lyrics of the music. There are many music videos in the industry that follow this particular style and here is an example to inspire my own music video.

Arctic Monkeys - 'Before the lights come on'

I will also be using short video clips together to create a montage of the couple's memories together. I have also taken inspiration from a few music videos too that use this style in their music videos. For example:

Gwen Stefani - 'Cool'

Analysis of new song lyrics 'So Here We Are' by Bloc Party

Here are the lyrics to my song which i will then analyse:

Analysis of lyrics

This song is a very abstract song in the way that the lyrics can be interpreted in many different ways. For me there is a double meaning in the lyrics which is both linked to relationships and drugs. I find this very common in song lyrics, where a naive audience can relate to the obvious meaning of the song but other more mature audiences can detect the underlying message within the song which usually include sexual intimacy and drugs. For example Van Morrison's - 'Brown eyed girl' is actually about his love for heroin, the eagles ' Hotel California' is about rehab and many Beatles songs like 'Lucy in the sky with diamonds' is actually a disguise for the drug LSD.

I will analyse both the meanings i get from the song individually:

Failed relationship

This song can relate to a failed relationship in many different ways. The first line 'I caught a glimpse, but its been forgotten' could relate to a person who thought about what life could be like with their partner but the reality of current pressures and unhappiness in their relationship makes it hard to imagine such a life. So the words 'so here we are' could show that their relationship hasn't progressed and their back to square one. It appears that their is an imbalance of feelings in the relationship and the lyrics are from the view of one partner who makes all the effort and commitment as shown in 'I made a vow, to carry you home' 'If you fall sick, if you pass out'. And i get the impression that however much they try to make it work for the both of them it never satisfied their partners needs which can be illustrated in the lines 'I really tried, to do what you wanted' and 'It all went wrong again'. I also think the repetition of some lyrics creates an emotional plea to their partner, almost as if there giving up and justifying how much they've tried to make it work. I feel like the last lines could be there chance at freedom and a way out of unhappiness when it says 'I figured it out, I can see again'. These lines are sang when the height of the music reaches a climax, and echoes the changes that are happening finally. I imagine that the person has found a way out of their relationship after realising that they wasn't loved in return, and it was almost as if they were blind until now and they can 'see again' and live without them for the better.

Drugs

This song can relate to drugs as well. The person could be addicted to a drugs and tried to imagine a life without drugs on the first line ' I caught glimpse but its been forgotten' and their addiction has over taken their life and there back to taken them again which could be illustrated in the lines 'So here we are again'. The use of the collective pronoun 'we' personifies the drug to show that their a unit and it has become a part of his life. This person could be trying to stop their addiction to drugs to save their relationship from the words 'I tried to do what you wanted' followed by 'It all went wrong again'. The repetition just like the first analysis shows a plea in the lyrics for their partner not to give up on them. It could also connote the way his mind works whilst experiencing the drug, by repeating things as he's not in his usual state of mind. The lines 'I made a vow, to carry you home' shows their commitment to their partner and that they plans to keep that vow, regardless of their addiction. I also found that it could be like the drug talking to the person, making a vow to them that it will comfort them and look after them 'If you fall sick, if you pass out'. The last two lines of the song 'I figured it out, i can see again' could be the person finally coming clean and leading a life without the drugs. I feel this because t links with the first line when he catches a glimpse of a life with no drugs, and now he can see again. This also could show his physical ability to see the world properly with the mask of drugs affecting his thoughts and vision. He has figured out all the problems in his life where due to the drugs and now he can live in liberty and freedom.
