Analysis of new song lyrics 'So Here We Are' by Bloc Party

Here are the lyrics to my song which i will then analyse:

Analysis of lyrics

This song is a very abstract song in the way that the lyrics can be interpreted in many different ways. For me there is a double meaning in the lyrics which is both linked to relationships and drugs. I find this very common in song lyrics, where a naive audience can relate to the obvious meaning of the song but other more mature audiences can detect the underlying message within the song which usually include sexual intimacy and drugs. For example Van Morrison's - 'Brown eyed girl' is actually about his love for heroin, the eagles ' Hotel California' is about rehab and many Beatles songs like 'Lucy in the sky with diamonds' is actually a disguise for the drug LSD.

I will analyse both the meanings i get from the song individually:

Failed relationship

This song can relate to a failed relationship in many different ways. The first line 'I caught a glimpse, but its been forgotten' could relate to a person who thought about what life could be like with their partner but the reality of current pressures and unhappiness in their relationship makes it hard to imagine such a life. So the words 'so here we are' could show that their relationship hasn't progressed and their back to square one. It appears that their is an imbalance of feelings in the relationship and the lyrics are from the view of one partner who makes all the effort and commitment as shown in 'I made a vow, to carry you home' 'If you fall sick, if you pass out'. And i get the impression that however much they try to make it work for the both of them it never satisfied their partners needs which can be illustrated in the lines 'I really tried, to do what you wanted' and 'It all went wrong again'. I also think the repetition of some lyrics creates an emotional plea to their partner, almost as if there giving up and justifying how much they've tried to make it work. I feel like the last lines could be there chance at freedom and a way out of unhappiness when it says 'I figured it out, I can see again'. These lines are sang when the height of the music reaches a climax, and echoes the changes that are happening finally. I imagine that the person has found a way out of their relationship after realising that they wasn't loved in return, and it was almost as if they were blind until now and they can 'see again' and live without them for the better.

Drugs

This song can relate to drugs as well. The person could be addicted to a drugs and tried to imagine a life without drugs on the first line ' I caught glimpse but its been forgotten' and their addiction has over taken their life and there back to taken them again which could be illustrated in the lines 'So here we are again'. The use of the collective pronoun 'we' personifies the drug to show that their a unit and it has become a part of his life. This person could be trying to stop their addiction to drugs to save their relationship from the words 'I tried to do what you wanted' followed by 'It all went wrong again'. The repetition just like the first analysis shows a plea in the lyrics for their partner not to give up on them. It could also connote the way his mind works whilst experiencing the drug, by repeating things as he's not in his usual state of mind. The lines 'I made a vow, to carry you home' shows their commitment to their partner and that they plans to keep that vow, regardless of their addiction. I also found that it could be like the drug talking to the person, making a vow to them that it will comfort them and look after them 'If you fall sick, if you pass out'. The last two lines of the song 'I figured it out, i can see again' could be the person finally coming clean and leading a life without the drugs. I feel this because t links with the first line when he catches a glimpse of a life with no drugs, and now he can see again. This also could show his physical ability to see the world properly with the mask of drugs affecting his thoughts and vision. He has figured out all the problems in his life where due to the drugs and now he can live in liberty and freedom.

The lyrics in relation to my music video:

The lyrics can relate to my own music video because its too about relationship that hasnt worked out and has come to end. The couple have to break up due to the pressure of university and long distances (the girl gets accepted to westminster in london and the boy doesnt succesful get in)
